This week's show
OUR SHOW WEEK STARTS ON THURSDAY,
SO NEW SHOWS WILL BE BROADCAST ON THURSDAY
AND REBROADCAST ON SATURDAY, SUNDAY AND TUESDAY
The featured artist for our May 16th show is JERRY DOUGLAS.
The 13-time Grammy winner has been called "the Charlie Parker of the Dobro." Though he'd never make this claim, no one has done more than Jerry Douglas to bring the singing, snarling sound of slide resonator guitar from the back porch to the concert stage. With his spellbinding technique and staggering musical imagination, Douglas ranks as one of the greatest guitarists of our time. His work as a solo artist, studio musician, and as the featured soloist with Alison Krauss and Union Station has put him at the forefront of acoustic music. Douglas has played on more than 1,600 albums and has added his magic touch to music by Paul Simon, Ray Charles, Elvis Costello, Phish, Dolly Parton, Ricky Skaggs, and J.D. Crowe and the New South. Douglas has released 13 solo albums, each an inspiring mix of soaring melody and fiery riffage.
In our exclusive interview, Douglas describes making his latest solo album, Traveler, and shares stories about recording it in various studios around the world. We'll listen to selections from Traveler throughout the interview.
The Rev. Jimmie Bratcher steps into our Player Spotlight with a song from his new album, Secretly Famous. We'll hear his tribute to a vintage Stratocaster in "57."
In our Back-to-Back segment, we explore one of rock's most enduring songs, "You Shook Me," which was penned by blues legends Willie Dixon and J. B. Lenoir. First, Muddy Waters sets the stage with his soulful 1962 rendition — the original recording. Then we'll hear Jeff Beck's amazing interpretation from Truth, his 1968 masterpiece.
Rounding out the program is a harp guitar duet with Muriel Anderson and John Doan, a moody instrumental from Kenny Vaughan, and a mysterious song from the new album by the amazing Cassie Taylor, featuring Steve Mignano on wicked lead guitar.
If you're jonesing for eclectic sounds — some old, some brand-spankin' new — please join us for an hour of lovingly curated guitar music. Your ears will smile!
