JOHN KNOWLES INTERVIEW
John Knowles Interview
(Originally aired on January 17, 2013)
Nashville-based nylon-string guitarist John Knowles is one of only five guitarists to be honored with Chet Atkins' Certified Guitar Player (C.G.P.) Award. Initially, Atkins used the Certified Guitar Player moniker as a humorous way to describe himself, appending the C.G.P. initials to his name in a “guitarman of letters” variation of PhD or MD. Eventually, Paul Yandell — who accompanied Atkins onstage and in the studio from the mid '70s through the rest of Atkins' career — encouraged Atkins to give the late Jerry Reed an official C.G.P. Award, in recognition of Reed's monumental contributions to the guitar.
In 1996, Knowles became the second C.G.P. recipient. This year, Knowles marks his 60th anniversary as a guitarist and to celebrate this landmark occasion, we interviewed him for this week's program. In our conversation, Knowles describes his early days as a guitarist, his musical development, and his creative association with Atkins — one that spanned decades. During this exclusive interview we'll hear selections from Knowles' new album, Waltz Forever.
