LUTHER DICKINSON INTERVIEW

Luther Dickinson Interview

(Originally aired on September 12, 2013)

As the fretboard wizard for the North Mississippi Allstars, Luther Dickinson pushes the boundaries of contemporary blues while keeping a firm grip on tradition. He and his brother Cody, who plays drums in NMA, were raised in a musical family. Their dad, fabled Memphis producer Jim Dickinson, schooled the brothers in the art of songwriting and recording, and from an early age Luther gained hands-on experience playing in Mississippi juke joints with the likes of Junior Kimbrough, Otha Turner, and R.L. Burnside. He also had a stint as lead guitarist with the Black Crowes and played on two of their recent albums, Warpaint and Before the Frost Until the Freeze.

The North Mississippi Allstars have a new album, the edgy and funky World Boogie Is Coming, and in our exclusive interview Dickinson describes recording the music, who inspired his guitar parts, and the role his brother Cody played in pushing the band into new sonic territories.
