MURALI CORYELL INTERVIEW

Murali Coryell Interview

(Originally aired on April 25, 2013)

Murali Coryell grew up enveloped in music. His dad, Larry Coryell, is known for pioneering jazz-rock guitar with the Gary Burton Quartet in 1967, and many critics feel he was the first to successfully mix these disparate 6-string styles. Murali's brother, Julian, is a jazz guitar virtuoso and producer. Murali's own musical path led him to Memphis soul and Chicago blues, and as a kid he drew inspiration from guitarists like Albert King, Jimi Hendrix, and Carlos Santana.

Coryell's latest album, Live, captures him onstage with his super-tight band performing a soulful set of original blues and rock songs. In our exclusive interview, Coryell describes his approach to songwriting and guitar playing, shares what he learned from his father about being a musician, and reveals why he chose to pursue blues, rather than jazz. We'll hear cuts from Live throughout the feature.
