Alberto Milani Spotlight

"Echoes Of You" from his CD Stories By The Bridge
TGS Spotlight Player from October 4, 2012

Alberto Milani was born on January 18, 1983 in Pordenone. He began playing as a self-taught musician at the age of seven. During the years, he has broadened his knowledege of styles and techniques studying with several teachers and playing with many musicians in a number of different musical contexts, as well as partecipating to clinics by the likes of Scott Henderson, Mike Stern, Frank Gambale, Carl Varheyen, Tuck Andress, Greg Howe.

In 2007 he graduated with honors at the Accademia Lizard in Firenze. Over the years, he has taught rock and fusion guitar in several music school and academies, including the Modern Music Institute of Treviso (from 2007 to 2012) and “Play School of Music” of Pordenone, of which he is co-founder and artistic director since 2009.

In the spring of 2007 he released his first solo album, entitled In|fusion, an instrumental record consisting of nine original tracks - composed by himself - and a cover in which he already shows compositive maturity, a mixture of jazz-fusion and rock in which engaging themes meet explosions of improvisation that are never for their own sake.

In November 2007 Alberto Milani’s first record was one of the three nominees for the Premio Toast at MEI in Faenza, receiving a special mention for “his attempt to refresh the national guitar scene".

In March 2008 he was awarded the 2008 Best Emerging Guitarist Award at the “Atkins-Dadi Guitar Players Association Italy” convention in Conegliano Veneto, performing two songs taken from his first studio album in front of a panel which included Martin Taylor as well as other distinguished names from the six strings world. Following this award, in the October of the same year he performed in Issoudun, France, representing Italy at the Issoudun Guitar Festival.

With his trio he took part in several jazz-blues festivals, such as: the Pistoia Blues Festival 2008 as the opening act for Johnny Winter, Hot Tuna and Dickey Betts & Great Southern; Jazzin'&Bluesin' (2008 and 2011); Guitar Connection (2008).

In 2009 he performed at the XIV Festival Chitarristico Internazionale del Friuli Venezia Giulia and for Soul&Strings; in 2010 he partecipated to Blues In Villa.

He is currently playing in several electric and acoustic band ranging from fusion to jazz, rock-blues and soul-funk. Since the spring of 2011 he is the official guitarist of Chiara Canzian’s band with Phil Mer on drums and Andrea Lombardini on bass.

For the Stories By The Bridge tour the trio has a brand new lineup with Andrea Lombardini on electric bass (Broken Band, Chiara Canzian) and Phil Mer on drums (Pooh, Malika Ayane, Chiara canzian, Pino Daniele). The band performs songs from Milani’s new album together with extracts from his debut album, In|fusion, and a few standards taken from the jazz tradition (Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Joshua Redman), revisited with the modern and experimental sound which is already characteristic of the trio, together with the moments of improvisation, the tight grooves and the relentless mixture of rock and jazz which is to be found in the harmonic texture of the songs, in the rhythmic interplay and in the sound as well as in their solos.
