Nick Moran Spotlight

"Natalya" from his CD No Time Like Now
TGS Spotlight Player from February 9, 2012

New York native Nick Moran grew up on the city’s lower east side listening to the iconic rock and blues guitarists Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Peter Frampton. Moran played in several rock groups throughout high school and college while also studying classical guitar. He first discovered jazz through the music of George Benson at age fifteen. Other musical influences include Jim Hall, Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.

Moran’s study of jazz began informally in 1991 with arranging and ear training classes at the Fachbereich Musik in Mainz, Germany, where he also played guitar and trumpet in the university big band. Later he was a protégé student of the great Ron Carter while studying at the City College of NY where he received his B.F.A. in Jazz Performance in 2001. His teachers at City include Ray Santos, Scott Reeves, guitarist Rick Stone and pianist/arranger Mike Holober. In addition to his organ trio, Moran plays in various rock bands and solo guitar settings. He’s cultivated a rich network of creative connections through performances with musicians such as the Ray Santos Orchestra, trumpeter Shunzo Ohno, bassists Tom Hubbard and Marco Panascia, guitarists Adam Rafferty, Nick Russo and Russ Spiegel, pianists Cliff Korman and Daniel Kelly, and drummer Andy Watson.

Moran’s highly acclaimed 2006 debut The Messenger “showcases the New York City native’s supple string work and fine writing in an organ trio format,” says Bob Weinberg in Jazziz Magazine. Rick Anderson of CD Hotlist says: “When the trio lineup consists of guitar, organ and drums, you can be pretty confident that funk will be on the menu. And that's certainly the case with the debut release from guitarist Nick Moran and his trio, but there's much more as well -- slippery modal abstraction, swinging bebop, tender and contemplative ballads. And he plays like a house on fire. Highly recommended.” Moran’s second CD, No Time Like Now will be released March 6th on the Manor Sound label.

An accomplished producer and recording engineer, Moran also runs his own production studio in Brooklyn, N.Y. Notable projects include Coba’s “Cancion Mandala,” the second CD by multi-instrumentalist and composer Sebastian Cruz, and “Retrato” by Alejandro Florez and Tibaguí.
