TGS PLAYER SPOTLIGHT - TIM & MYLES THOMPSON

Tim and Myles Thompson Spotlight

"Red Haired Boy" from their LP Road Runner
TGS Spotlight Player from January 27, 2011

Guitar wiz Tim Thompson is a son of northern Minnesota but his precocious musical talents brought him, inevitably, to Nashville — a place where the fiercest fret burners can be found on every street corner and only the best of the best survive.

But Thompson did more than survive, quickly finding himself in demand as a performer, lyricist, song publisher, producer, and — most of all — a sought-after session cat in the Music City’s elite recording studios.

Despite his background in rock and a particularly deep schooling in jazz, it was early in the new millennium that Thompson started to focus his formidable musical energies into fingerstyle guitar, enough to win the fabled International Fingerstyle Guitar Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas in 2008.

Now with fully eight CDs (and counting) in his catalog on his own Hidden Giant Records label, Thompson has become one of the most acclaimed fingerpickers on the scene, in Nashville and the world. His is a next-generation hybrid of the aristocratic skill of Chet Atkins, the freewheeling, out-of-left-field originality of Jerry Reed, the mercurial flash of Tommy Emmanuel — and a whole bandolero of riffs and ideas that you simply won’t hear from anyone else.

Thompson’s teen-aged son Myles is himself a musically precocious apple that hasn’t fallen far from the proverbial tree. Introduced to mandolin and fiddle at age five and a deadly serious violinist since 12, Myles — with his lyrical, mature tone and masterful-beyond-his years jazz chops — has been increasingly sharing the stage with his father, both in local gigs and on world tours. A father-and-son act unlike any other, Tim and Myles Thompson stand at the new century’s vanguard of frets-and-strings Americana.
